How art improves mental health.

Updated: Sep 19, 2023

Studies have repeatedly shown that art has an overwhelmingly positive impact on mental health. Not only does it provide a creative outlet for emotions, but it also aids in increasing your happiness in several ways. Below are a few ways in which art improves mental health.

Decreases stress levels.

  • Moreover, practicing art stimulates the brain and enhances cognitive function, which in turn, can significantly improve one's overall well-being. So how can you just start creating art? It can be as simple as doodling on a notebook or stopping by your local arts and crafts shop, like Hobby Lobby or Michaels, to see what inspires you. Start decreasing your stress today and start creating.

Increases your Joy.

  • Viewing art has been known to promote feelings of joy, calmness, and tranquility. In fact, some researchers have even suggested that it may be an effective complementary therapy for treating depression and anxiety. Get to your favorite art gallery or museum and give yourself permission to lose yourself in others' creations. Once you take time to do this notice how you feel. Do you feel more joy? Did the art inspire you?

Increases dopamine.

  • Creating art has been shown to increase dopamine levels in the brain. This is because the process of making art can be both rewarding and pleasurable, leading to a release of dopamine in the brain. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter associated with feelings of pleasure, motivation, and reward, and is often referred to as the "feel-good" chemical. So, when you engage in activities like painting or drawing, you may experience a boost in mood and a sense of accomplishment that can contribute to overall well-being. Keep up the good work!

So, incorporating art into one's daily routine can certainly prove to be a beneficial step towards achieving a healthier and happier mental state.
