Robert De Leon

Robert believes in putting his best effort into whatever he paints, from miniatures to murals. His interest in art began in grade school in Texas. Since the Fourth Grade I knew I wanted to become an artist, he says. I liked everything having to do with art, and since history was my second favorite subject, combining the two interests was a natural. His paintings often depict the history of the American West. I am not a historian, just an artist who enjoys reading about the American West, and the Native People and hope to capture it on canvas. Many of his paintings show different Native Tribes in a peaceful and tranquil setting. Robert says that Native Americans are a common subject matter in my work because I have always been intrigued by their spirit. His painting style is reminiscent of the Hudson River School Artist, most notably Albert Bierstadt, and Thomas Moran. He has also been influenced by the works of other Nineteenth Century artists, including George Catlin, Karl Bodmer, and Henry Farny. Traveling throughout the western states such as Arizona, Montana, Colorado, and Wyoming provides Robert with new materials. Today he calls Santa Fe, New Mexico his home. He begins his day at 5:00 a.m. with a morning walk, which gives him time to collect his thoughts on new paintings. Later in the painting process, I reach a point where the painting starts to take on its own character. That is when I really enjoy working with it. In 2010, Robert was one of eight artists and volunteers who completed the restoration of the interior of The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi, in Santa Fe. He has also opened Studio 901 where he conducts art classes for middle and high school students. At the end of each session, an Open House Art Show is held for the students. In Santa Fe, you can see his work at Running Wolf Studio in Santa Fe. Contact Info: Robert De Leon Fine Art Email: robdel212@yahoo.com
