Artist JuLee Simmons
I am based in Denver, Colorado and have been painting most days since I was ten. I studied art at the University of Denver and completed my formal training at the San Francisco Art Institute, but in terms of what I know today I am mostly self taught. I began my career as a staff artist for several sports franchises, and then spent a number of years painting portraits and golf art for the Senior PGA Tour. Sports art sometimes is derided as genre art, but my sports work permitted me to develop a familiarity with the human form which I still draw on to create fine art. My painting style today is a bit looser than it used to be. I am more focused on color and brushwork now. I try to create scenes that are timeless. When the viewer has no historical reference, it is easier to focus on the emotional content of the piece. I love the Impressionists and the romantic perspective of Nineteenth Century artists such as John Singer Sargeant, J.W. Waterhouse, and N.C. Wyeth. Todays artists stand on the shoulders of the great artists who came before us!
